Dragons, on your mark… Get set… Go! You read that right: This weekend, Chinese dragon boats—manned by rowers—will race to the finish line as they slice through the calm waters of the Potomac River. But before they do, the dragons will be the subject of an authentic eye-dotting ceremony, an ancient Chinese tradition.
It's all part of the DC Dragon Boat Festival, which is sponsored by the Chinese Women's League (CWL) and exists to bring a little Chinese culture to the DC area. The two-day festival returns for its 15th season this Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, bringing with it traditional lion dance performances, make-and-take crafts, Chinese cuisine, and, of course, dragon boat races, the latter of which take to the water promptly at 9 a.m. each festival day.
