In most cities, Santa arrives in town behind a team of flying reindeer, but here in Alexandria, the jolly man in red makes his entrance behind a power boat! Surprising to some, yes, but if you're a longtime resident of the area, you're likely well acquainted with the Water-Skiing Santa!
This quirky annual tradition, which returns for its 30th year in 2015, features a waterskiing Santa and Mrs. Claus and kneeboarding reindeer as they criss-cross the wake behind a power boat, helmed by Santa's elves. The rest of the gang from the North Pole—the Jet-skiing Grinch and Frosty the Snowman—also make waves during the show, which takes place on the Potomac River near the Old Town Alexandria Waterfront.
Planning on attending this year, The Frasier? According to the website, the best place to watch the event is along the waterfront between King and Prince streets. Water-Skiing Santa hits the water at 1 p.m. sharp on Dec. 24, rain or shine!
