Two hundred years ago the building at 1315 Duke Street was one of the nation's most infamous slave trading companies, but today it's home to the Freedom House Museum, which tells the stories of the many enslaved people who passed through these halls.
The museum itself is small but powerful, with a basement-level exhibit that uses first-person narratives to illuminate Alexandria's role in the domestic slave trade. Keep in mind that the museum deals frankly with challenging subject matter, and museum staff recommend that visitors be at least eight years old to enter. Finally, be aware that the museum has limited hours: it's only open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons between 1 and 5 p.m., so plan your visit accordingly. If you have a group of more than seven people, call ahead and you'll be able to schedule a time to visit outside regular hours.
