It’s taken over 10 years and more than 2,000 volunteers to free Shepherd Parkway of more than 200 tons of trash. That’s because, prior to 2011, the 197-acre parkland corridor had become a dumping ground for those looking to illegally dispose of unwanted items. But since the restoration efforts began, they’ve already had a huge impact on Mother Nature! And they continue today with monthly installments of the Shepherd Parkway Community Cleanup.

Join fellow eco-warriors on August 13th to do your part. As you team up to fill trash bags, you’ll be protecting the lush natural habitat that exists on the Shepherd Parkway, including acres of hardwood forests and two bald eagle nests. The park also plays host to the historic remains of Civil War-era forts. In addition to picking up the man-made mess, you’ll also help to reign in invasive species by removing vines from trees, an effort that’s already freed more than 500 tree trunks from certain death. Please make sure to dress in long sleeves and pants, along with close-toed shoes, all of which can get dirty. BYO water bottle; you’ll be supplied with water refills, as well as gloves and bags.
