Since Gravelly Point sits just a few hundred feet from the Ronald Reagan International Airport's runway, couples and friends often post up in the park's lush grass and watch planes soar by overhead. On the next clear day, grab a blanket, spread it out on the lawn, and join them in plane-spotting.
Some come for the history, however. Gravelly Point was once Abingdon, the estate of Captain John Alexander and then home to John Parke Custis—the adopted son of George Washington. When the home caught fire in the 1930s, it was all but destroyed. However, the ruins remain. You can explore them and the history surrounding Abingdon when you head to Gravelly Point. Just next door inside Terminal A of the airport you'll find an exhibit dedicated to artifacts that once belonged to the inhabitants of Abingdon.
