Located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, the Athenaeum houses the gallery of the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association (NVFAA) and also features special art exhibitions. The NVFAA strives to establish premier arts programs that enrich the culture of Northern Virginia and beyond by presenting exhibitions featuring prominent regional artists or performances by top musicians and actors.
The building itself is a work of art – the beautiful Greek Revival building was constructed in 1851 and is on both the Virginia Trust and National Register of Historic Places. In addition to art exhibits, the museum also hosts special events throughout the year. Coming up on September 29th is the Athenaeum Beach Club, a last celebration of the summer with beach music, luxe picnic fare, signature cocktails, and doo-wop singers. Guests are invited to wear their favorite Hawaiian shirt, flip flops, and sunglasses. The Athenaeum is also available to rent for private events, such as weddings, corporate parties, and more.
Admission is free and visiting hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
