The Friendship Firehouse Festival, held this year on August 6, is a free annual celebration of one of the city’s finest historical institutions. In 1774, the Friendship Fire Company was established as the first volunteer fire department in the city of Alexandria. In 1855, the company moved into a building constructed near the intersection of King and North Alfred, just a few blocks from Market Square and City Hall. That building now houses the Friendship Firehouse Museum, and chronicles the history of firefighting in the area.
The annual Firehouse Festival is partially a fundraiser for the museum’s historic preservation and educational missions, but it’s also become a beloved local tradition. The family-friendly event features dozens of booths from local artisans, merchants, and craftspeople, as well as live music and educational displays. Children can sit inside a city fire truck, get a free plastic fire helmet, and learn about fire safety at the same time.
