Depart The Frasier, Travel Back to the Civil War Era With a Visit to the Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site in Alexandria

Alexandria is full of historic sites bustling with tourists, but the Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site on West Braddock Road is one of the area’s hidden gems. Showcasing the system of defenses constructed by the Union Army to protect Washington DC during the Civil War, Fort Ward highlights the role Alexandria played in the Civil War, honors those who sacrificed their lives in that war, and educates visitors on the everyday life of 19th-century Americans.

During your visit you can see everything from household objects and military equipment to artwork that was appreciated by 19th-century Americans. You’ll also have the opportunity to engage with Civil War reenactors who volunteer at the site, portraying the lives of soldiers and civilians in Alexandria in the 1860s. Visitors praise the site's beautiful grounds, which make it possible to plan your day at Fort Ward as a combination museum trip and picnic in the park.

Located just moments from The Frasier, the Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site is open Tuesdays through Sundays. Admission is free.
